A Medical Herbalist, Functional Medicine Practitioner, Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist and Naturopath, with expertise and training in Medicinal Food and Cookery, Shahena is on a mission to bring clarity to people about the notoriously myth-ridden Natural Health field, and make Medicinal Food, and the real facts behind Nutrition and Herbal Medicine to heal and prevent disease, accessible and enjoyable to a wider audience; using clincial studies and the latest scientific research, she reveals the truth behind what works in herbal and phyto medicine and nutrition, whilst looking at the facts behind the healing properties of the ingredients used to make delicious recipes and natural remedies.


 


She is on a mission to bring clarity to people about the notoriously myth-ridden Natural Health field, whilst revealing the amazing clinical facts about Medicinal Food, and making the truth about Nutrition and Natural Remedies (using Herbal and Phyto Medicine) to heal and prevent disease, accessible and enjoyable to a wider audience. She specialises in natural medicine, healthy eating and dispelling the myths about nutrition and diet fads and trends by developing healthy, balanced recipes. Shahena decided to move from studying conventional medicine to follow her passion for medical herbalism, nutrition and naturopathy (natural medicine and herbal medicine with nutritional medicine), as well as cookery. 


 


Shahena believes that in order to prevent a ticking time-bomb epidemic of lifestyle and diet-related illnesses, such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity, from occurring, it is vital to understand how to cook healthier food. She has a wealth of knowledge in the medicinal and healing effects of foods, as well as foods related to anti-ageing and beauty.


 


Shahena has also been appointed as a BBC Expert Voice on Naturopathy, Nutrition and Natural Medicine. As an NHS ‘Change4Life' ambassador for healthy eating, Shahena has a keen interest in the topics of increasing longevity through the food we eat, and the prevention of lifestyle-based illnesses and diet-related diseases. She also investigates how spices are used in cooking for their health-giving properties. She has discovered that food from around the world, uses ingredients that have an array of healing powers.


 


Shahena has written, and contributed to, publications including The Daily Mail, Huffington Post, Time Out and SHE. She has also featured on television and radio for the likes of the BBC, UKTV and Good Food Channel, speaking on topics such as health, diet, food and cookery and the relationship these areas have with each other.

Shahena believes that ‘what you eat affects your health and appearance’, and with an original perspective on this principle, apart from healthy cooking, she is able to create recipes that can do everything from boost your energy and concentration levels to improve the condition of your hair and skin. Her own experience of resolving skin issues through eating and omitting certain foods has helped her to realise how important it is to first try changing what we eat instead of quickly resorting to pills and medication for minor cosmetic ailments.

           

Appointed as Ambassador and Spokesperson for The Department of Health’s (NHS) ‘Change4Life’ Campaign, Shahena has been featured on TV & radio (UKTV Food, BBC Radio), in national magazines & newspapers. With a diverse background in food, beauty and the sciences, Shahena is internationally recognized as an authority on Healthy Eating and Cookery and has won the Channel S Awards ‘Contribution to the Community’ Award for London for her outstanding contribution to the British Bangladeshi Community through the food and beauty industries. 



As a former medic who, whilst studying medicine, has proceeded to delve into the nutrition and cookery fields, Shahena has a wealth of knowledge on the subjects of Indian Cookery, Medicinal and Healing Foods, as well as foods related to anti-ageing and beauty.

 

After working as a city Fund Manager, she developed a keen interest in Culinary Nutrition, and spices in Indian cuisine in particular. Shahena feels that it is vital to understand how to cook healthier Indian food, primarily because Indian cuisine has seen a huge rise in popularity, especially in the UK and therefore, there are so many people eating this cuisine on a regular basis.

 

Shahena started learning about nutrition and medicinal ingredients in Indian food whilst travelling around the Indian Sub-continent;. Not only does she bring  what she has learned from cooking Indian food with recipes handed down through generations of her family, Shahena is also restaurant trained in Indian cookery.

 

She has a passion for healthy Indian food and, because Indian cooking uses ingredients that have an array of healing powers, she incorporates ingredients with medicinal properties into her cooking. Coming from a restaurant background, she has been restaurant trained in Indian cookery and her knowledge of healthy eating and nutrition is in-depth. Specializing in Medicinal & Beauty Foods, Shahena was also the founder of natural beauty brand, as featured on QVC and in partnership with retailers such as Debenhams and Selfridges; with such insight into the beauty and anti-ageing, she is also a Food and Beauty writer and has contributed with articles for several national and international magazine publications.
