Chilli, Lime & Coriander Cod Roe Patties

(Serves 8)

Cod Roe - a sure sign that  Spring is about to arrive...

Cod Roe is currently in season during the Springtime. Get it while you can! An excellent source of Vitamin C, Thiamin and Folate, and a very good source of Protein, Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Riboflavin, Vitamin B12, Phosphorus and Selenium, it has many of the vital nutrients you'll need.


Quick and easy to make, these unusual Cod Roe Patties are the perfect snack or starter. Bursting with flavour, they taste fresh and tangy and have a satisfyingly moreish quality to them. Serve with Lime wedges accompanied by Hari Chutney (Fresh Green Chilli, Lemon and Coriander Chutney) or with Smoked Salmon for a milder flavour.



1 kg Fresh Cod Roe

2 Onions, chopped finely

A handful of fresh Coriander, chopped finely 

2 tbsp. Ground Coriander (Coriander Powder)

2 tbsp. Ground Turmeric (Turmeric Powder) 

1 ½ - 2 tsp. Salt 

Juice of 1 Lime

6 Green Chillies, chopped

Oil for shallow frying



1.      Prepare and clean the fresh Cod Roe and set aside in a bowl. 

2.     Add the salt, fresh coriander, ground coriander, green chillies, lime juice, onion and turmeric to the cod roe and mix all of the ingredients together until they are well combined.  

3.     Place enough oil in a frying pan in order to shallow fry the cod roe patties. Heat the oil on a medium to high heat and with a tablespoon, add 1 tbsp. of the cod roe mixture to the oil. The mixture will spread out in to a small circle. If there is space in the frying pan, add more spoonfuls to the oil to be able to fry a batch of cod roe patties at the same time.

4.    Serve hot or cold, accompanied by lime wedges, Hari Chutney (Fresh Green Chilli, Lemon and Coriander Chutney) or with Smoked Salmon for a milder flavour.
